Digital Badges: Showcasing Skills and Progress in Health Education

Digital badges are virtual credentials that offer significant value to health science learners by providing a flexible and verifiable way to showcase their competencies, achievements and continuous learning progress.

For health science professionals—whose ongoing education is critical to career growth—digital badges communicate not only expertise in a specialized area, but also a commitment to staying current with evolving practices and standards.

On a higher level, badging promotes student engagement, awareness about the University of Colorado Anschutz as a global leader in health sciences education, and a higher standard of care across all health science fields.

Behind the Badge: The Process and Purpose

The Office of Digital Learning (ODL) supports campus partners in creating and issuing badges through Credly.

Steps to get started:

  1. Submit a Badge Intake Form to initiate the process
  2. Collaborate with ODL to design your badge and confirm required approvals
  3. Issue your badge - once learners meet the criteria, ODL will send the badge via Credly.

Ongoing responsibilities (of the faculty/staff):

  1. Notify ODL of any program changes or if the badge is discontinued
  2. Maintain accurate program and competency information

Partnering with the Office of Digital Learning to develop digital badges for our Manager Certification and HR Professional Development Programs has been a transformative step forward. These badges not only instill a sense of pride in participants upon completion, but they also enhance the credibility of our programs by clearly linking strong competencies and learning objectives to each badge. The ability to showcase these achievements on LinkedIn and other professional platforms empowers our employees to celebrate their growth and share their development journey with a broader audience. This collaboration has elevated the visibility and impact of our professional development efforts across the organization.
